Gordon S. Barrass served in the British Embassy in Beijing from 1970-72 and then at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London, where he spent the next two years developing Sino-British cultural exchanges. He continued to be involved with Sino-British relations over the next twenty years. Since becoming International Adviser to PriceWaterhouseCoopers in 1993 he has made more than 50 visits to China, giving him the opportunity to continue his research and collecting of modern Chinese calligraphy. He was the guest curator of the exhibition "Brushes with Surprise: The Art of Calligraphy in Modern China", which was staged at The British Museum from 30 January to 19 May 2002. He is the author of The Art of Calligraphy in Modern China (British Museum Press, 2002).
