Protest
Deng sent this poem to a friend in 1958.
It laments their separation. He skilfully alludes to the punishment of the best intellectuals for speaking out during the 'Hundred Flowers Movement' and to his exile. He marked the occasion by signing himself 'Happy old Shit', a term he had
not used since 1949. The seal shown
to the right reads 'in vain do I try to
stir the senses'.
