In 'The Future is Bright, But...'(2000), Pu expresses an optimism about the impact of economic development on China's western regions that is tempered by environmental concerns.

The Future

The ancient pictograms of stars, arrows, wheels, etc. (shown right, top) symbolise high technology.

Those for trees (middle) highlight the importance of environmental protection.

The patches of bright colour, as used in folk paintings, are a reminder of the need to protect traditional culture.

The pictogram of a fallen banner (bottom) suggest uncertainty, but the prevailing colour is gold, to express optimism.
