Carlyle's copy of A Christmas Carol.
This presentation copy of the first edition was inscribed by the author to Thomas
Carlyle, "From his friend / Charles Dickens / Eighteenth December 1843." Four days later, Carlyle
reinscribed the same copy of the book to John Welsh, a relative of his wife, Jane Welsh Carlyle:
"read with satisfaction; presented with satisfaction, and many Christmas wishes ..."
