U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Edison National Historic Site   An 1895 image of a man viewing a Kinetoscope. The Kinetoscope pictured is equipped with synchronized sound. Also known as a Kinetophone, the sound-equipped Kinetoscope held a phonograph inside its cabinet. The viewer could watch films through the machine while listening a phonograph through the ear tubes. The phonograph and the kinetoscope were connected with a belt that offered a crude attempt at synchronizing sound with the film.
