 Biodiversity: An Economic Approach

Dr Giles Atkinson

Giles Atkinson is a lecturer in environmental policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science. An environmental economist by training, his research interests cover wide aspects of environmental policy. In particular, his recent work has examined issues such as the distribution of burdens of environmental policy and social capital and crime. In addition, he has published extensively on the subject of sustainable development. Much of this research has examined how policy-makers might design better measures of economic progress through 'green accounting'. A recent example is his collaborative project with colleagues in Peru that constructs indicators to provide a better account of the losses arising from deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon. His book Measuring Sustainable Development (Edward Elgar Publishing, 1997) is now published in paperback (1999).
