Anne of Austria, daughter of Philip III of Spain, married Louis XIII of France when she was
fourteen. Her marriage was an unhappy one, as the king relegated her to the sidelines under the
influence of his chief minister, Cardinal Richelieu. The king had tried to prevent her from becoming
regent at his death by providing in his will for a council of regency. Upon his death in 1643,
however, Anne got the council overturned and had herself proclaimed sole regent. Showing Anne
tenderly embracing her son, Louis XIV, this medallion commemorates the coming to the throne of the
five-year-old king as well as his mother's role, with the help of her adviser Cardinal Mazarin, in
guiding him to his place as head of France.
