Passover Haggadah from the Padua Italian Rite Mahzor (Italy, 15th century).
Despite the intricate designs found on these manuscripts, Jews were not permitted to belong to the craft guilds during this time. The overly-magnificent depiction here of maror suggests a gentile illuminator, unclear that the concept of "bitter herbs" in the Passover Haggadah called for lettuce leaves, rather than, say, olive leaves.
