International Security (2) Producing Jihad: The Al Qaeda Recruitment Tape From: Columbia International Affairs Online Osama bin Laden's network has employed a variety of methods to disseminate his ideology. A notable recruitment method has been the use of videotapes produced by bin Laden's supporters with the intention of enlisting young Arab men to travel to Afghanistan and train for a holy war in defense of Islam. This seminar examines one of those tapes in depth and evaluates its significance as a tool of propaganda. Trouble in the Balkans From: London School of Economics and Political Science In this seminar, Sumantra Bose, lecturer in comparative politics at the London School of Economics and Political Science, considers the conflict in Bosnia. He begins by exploring the explosive historical legacy of the area and then, in a series of interviews with Fathom, he addresses the central questions. Was it a conflict over territory, religion or race? How could communities which had apparently existed in peace clash so suddenly and with such ferocity? Where exactly will the road to peace lead and, perhaps most importantly, will the lessons of history be learned or will the twenty-first century see yet more trouble in the Balkans? | |||||||||||||||
