A New-Media Look at the City
From: Columbia University | By:

EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION |

ew York City has always been viewed as the cultural and social mecca of the world--at least by New Yorkers--and has drawn immigrants from every corner of the globe. Through NYC24 (www.nyc24.com), an online magazine, the New Media Workshop 2000 at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism explores the different cultures, people and trends that have taken root in the city.

The NYC24 site takes a unique and interesting look at varied aspects of life in New York City.
Teams of reporters traversed New York City in search of stories that fall into eight themes, each featuring seven multimedia stories. The themes include Food, Critters, Birth & Death, High & Deep, (In)efficiency, Shooting, Makeover and Moving. Encompassed within these are stories on Bangladeshi restaurants, the exotic and not so rare pets of New Yorkers, suicide, sperm donation, the renovation of Harlem and ex-convicts getting their lives back together.

The site also features an in-depth look at the pattern of immigration following the No. 7 Train (7train.nyc24.com/) from Manhattan to Queens, focusing on the stories of Middle Eastern, South Asian, South American and European immigrants.

Through its audio, visual and written components, the site offers a glimpse into the diverse place that is New York City.
