"Why Couldn't Slobodan Milosevic Be Like Nelson Mandela?"
From: Columbia University | By: Daniel Chirot

EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION | With the title of this lecture, delivered at the Harriman Institute of Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, sociologist Daniel Chirot intentionally raises a question that he cannot answer. Why did former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic lead his country into senseless genocidal conflict? Was Milosevic really a convinced ultra-nationalist? Or was he merely an opportunist who exploited the nationalism of ordinary Serbs? Chirot argues that in order to understand how world leaders develop their ideologies, scholars need to consider biographical information in addition to economic and political dynamics.

Daniel Chirot discusses ethnic conflict.
