AFI's 100 Years...100 Laughs: America's Funniest Movies
From: American Film Institute | By:

EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION |

hen Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis dressed in drag and joined an all-girl band in the 1959 film Some Like It 100 Years...100 LaughsHot, they may not have realized that their cross-dressing comedic performances would stand the test of time. According to a panel of 1,800 blue-ribbon leaders from the American film community, this Billy Wilder film is the funniest American movie released during the 20th century.

To mark the 100th anniversary of American movies, the American Film Institute (AFI) released three Top 100 lists that honor the film and film artists of the 20th century. The American Film Institute's list of the 100 funniest American movies (www.AFIonline.org/100laughs) identifies the best comedic performances, scripts and directors across all comedy genres: from slapstick to romantic comedy, from satire and musical comedy to black comedy, from The Navigator (1924) to There's Something About Mary (1998).

AFI's "100 Years...100 Laughs" site, released in June 2000, hosts movie trailers, on-set photos and a searchable film database with movie descriptions and film credits for the 500 nominated films from which the final 100 were selected. And for those not content with the jury's Top 100 list, AFI provides a movie directory that allows users to create their own Top 10 list of the funniest movies of all time.
