The frontispiece of John Case's 1588 political treatise Sphaera Civitatis compares Queen Elizabeth I's role in governing the state to that of the motivating power behind the geocentric universe. Each of the spheres of the universe is associated with one of the queen's virtues, including courage (fortitudo) in the sphere of Mars.
