Figure 1: Carruthers interprets this marginal motif as the catena or chain, a succession of associations, in which one image pulls the other along with it like a fish on a hook. Since each fish bites the tail of the fish in front, only a few hooks need attaching to the text to draw up the whole chain of various fish from the depths.
