EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION |
Following the events of September 11, 2001, words and phrases such as "attack on America" and "war on terrorism" began entering the vocabulary of the American public. In a forum hosted by Columbia University on October 16, 2001, Eric Foner, De Witt Clinton Professor of History at Columbia University, analyzes how politicians and the media use language to illuminate and distort reality. He examines the way in which five terms--terrorism, freedom, patriotism, missing, and God--shape people's perception of reality in a post-September 11 world. |
