Diabolical Virtuosos: Franz Liszt and Niccolo Paganini
From: Science Museum and The Victoria and Albert Museum | By: David Kushner

EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION | Niccolo Paganini was born in 1782 in Genoa, Italy. His father recognised his musical ability at an early stage and sought to capitalise on this talent. Paganini was presented as a child prodigy and, by the time of his death, he was renowned as a violinist "diabolical" in virtuosity. Similarly, the Hungarian Franz Liszt made his debut at the age of nine and was also acknowledged as the most controversial and accomplished pianist of his time. In this lecture given at the "Locating the Victorians" conference held at the Science Museum in June 2001, musicologist David Kushner explores the lives and works of these explosive composers who lived and worked at the cusp of the romantic and modern musical styles.

David Kushner discusses the lives and works of Niccolo Paganini and Franz Liszt.
