White-collared Kingfishers
The New York Public Library, Rare Books Division
The vivid blue plumage of the White-collared Kingfisher (Halcyon chloris) stands out against uncolored South Pacific scenery in an illustration from John Cassin's 1858 mammalogy and ornithology atlas, the best-known portion of the multi-volume United States Exploring Expedition. During the years 1838, 1839, 1840, 1841, 1842, under the command of Charles Wilkes ... (Philadelphia,1844-74). The engraving on steel by Dongal, after the drawing by Titian Ramsey Peale, who served as artist-naturalist on the US government-sponsored voyage round the world, demonstrates the suitability of this medium for the reproduction of amazingly minute details.
