This portrait of a handsome black stallion (Equus caballus), "by Old Blacklegs, from a Mare of the Dishley Blood" is not only a fine example of zoological illustration, but crosses over into the area of animal portraiture, as do all the colorful lithographs by William Nicholson, after the paintings by William Shiels, in David Low's Breeds of the Domestic Animals of the British Islands (London, 1842). Each of the creatures recorded in its pages is an outstanding representative of its kind, intended to serve as a visual inspiration to farmers and other breeders.
