Raccoons
The New York Public Library, Rare Books Division
The familiar Raccoon (Procyon lotor) is one of many native land mammals portrayed in the first, large-format edition of Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America (New York, 1845-48) and the subsequent octavo Quadrupeds of North America (New York, 1849-54) by John James Audubon and John Bachman. Although both editions are illustrated with hand-colored lithographs, there are major differences in many of the illustrations. Audubon's son, John Woodhouse Audubon, who painted fully half of the animal portraits for Viviparous Quadrupeds, included his father's drawing of a young Raccoon (rear figure) in the illustration for the later, smaller edition. His original painting, and the first edition, depicts only the adult animal.
