Remarking on the different goals parents had for men and women, one black man whose family encouraged him to go to college and get an education mentioned:

I had three sisters and they were all married at sixteen years old. Becoming a good wife, raise children, provide a clean home environment, cook, being a good cook, but hmmm. There was no talk about college.
