Remarking on the importance of raising children to her parents and women of her own generation, one white woman said:

I think it was just assumed. Especially in those days. Thinking back, I think women of my age back then it was just assumed that you would marry and have children.

Another woman recalled her parents' view:

I would marry, have the required two or three children and be a homemaker. Only if my husband died would I need this career that I was being trained for.
