Some fifties cohort members did mention events from World War II. Here are some typical responses:

I just remember the celebration afterwards. And the blackouts before, during the war, and the airplanes flying over. I probably picked up on the stress of other people because I was only 3 or 4 years old. And even in school they would teach you not to eat certain foods, or what to do if the Japanese came. That really stands out a lot in my mind.

Another person said, "Roosevelt--that was a very important name in my house." And another mentioned the Holocaust.
