Though important, the civil rights movement did not seem to play an identity-formative role for members of the fifties cohort. For example, one black woman said: I followed an awful lot--from freedom riders on--of the movement, but always felt deep down inside that I would not jump on a bus full of people from Michigan... It just was not in me to go and be there in it. |
