Radiocarbon ages do not necessarily represent actual ages, due to the fact that the radiocarbon content of the atmosphere in the past has not been constant, and so ancient organisms may have accumulated slightly different amounts during their lifetimes. Various "calibration curves" have been created by comparing radiocarbon age determinations with those produced by other methods, and ages have been corrected from here onwards.
