The Sainsbury Wing ignited controversy in 1984 when the winners of an architectural design competition for the building, the architectural firm of Ahrends, Burton and Koralek, withdrew after the Prince of Wales called their design "a monstrous carbuncle on the face of a much loved friend." It is built on the last open space in Trafalgar Square
