ive and Discover lets Web users plumb the depths of the ocean and learn about deep-sea discoveries along with the scientists who are on multiweek ocean journeys on research vessels such as the Melville. In addition to exploring a site rich in scientific information, users are invited to submerge themselves in life on board the ship, with a tour of the craft and explanations of the day-to-day interactions. |
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, one of the premier ocean-research institutions in the world, has been inviting landlubbers to accompany scientists voyaging into the deep since 1999, through the interactive expeditions at Dive and Discover (science.whoi.edu/DiveDiscover). Participants can view the seafloor through the eyes of geologists, geophysicists, chemists and biologists, who reveal the novelties and intricacies of life and earth miles below the ocean's surface. |
Colorful photos, graphics and animations in the "Deeper Discovery" section of the site explain scientific principles in chemistry and geology and show the variety of deep-sea life. The clear user interface makes it easy to explore subjects within stories and to learn about not only the science behind the research but also the equipment that scientists use. Dive and Discover goes beyond the average science education site in that it lets online participants exchange e-mails with researchers at sea and gives daily updates of scientific findings during the journey. Users can even see the daily menu aboard the ship so they can prepare the same food--without worrying about getting seasick. |
