hat do The Sound of Music, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Sand Pebbles, The Haunting and Star Trek: The Motion Picture have in common? They were all directed by Robert Wise. The editor of Orson Welles's Citizen Kane, Wise went on to direct films for more than five decades. |
The American Film Institute's online tribute to Robert Wise (www.AFIonline.org/wise/robert_wise.html) was created in 1998 when Robert Wise received AFI's prestigious Life Achievement Award. Chronicling Wise's long and varied career, the website includes film clips of Robert Wise talking about the making of Citizen Kane, excerpts of nearly all of Wise's films--including West Side Story, The Body Snatcher, Helen of Troy and Odds Against Tomorrow--photo galleries and film credits for his work, and inside information about Wise's filmmaking techniques and on-set trials and tribulations. Throughout his career, Wise worked with some of the biggest names and most powerful people in Hollywood, and the online tribute is an excellent resource for learning about Hollywood filmmaking from the 1940s through the 1990s. |
