An Ounce of Prevention, a Pound of Uncertainty: The Cost-Effectiveness of School-Based Drug Prevention Programs
From: RAND | By: Jonathan P. CaulkinsC. Peter RydellSusan S. EveringhamJames ChiesaShawn Bushway

EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION | For the past three decades, the "war on drugs" in the United States has relied primarily on law enforcement to combat drug traffickers, dealers and users. In recent years, however, more and more politicians and voters have begun to support programs aimed at preventing drug use, especially among young people. Supporters say that such prevention programs are cheaper and more effective than law enforcement or treatment programs. This study, conducted by the Drug Policy Research Center at RAND, evaluates the strength of these arguments by examining drug prevention programs at schools throughout the US.

Jonathan P. Caulkins, C. Peter Rydell, Susan S. Everingham, James Chiesa and Shawn Bushway examine drug prevention programs in this excerpt from An Ounce of Prevention, a Pound of Uncertainty: The Cost-Effectiveness of School-Based Drug Prevention Programs.
