Grace Hoadley Dodge: A Woman of Her Times
From: Columbia University | By:

EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION |

race Hoadley Dodge (1856-1914) laid the building blocks for the establishment of Teachers College, which she founded in 1887 with Professor Nicholas Murray Butler of Columbia University. Dodge was a principal benefactor of Teachers College during its early history and an unwavering believer in its potential for growth. Historians say the college would have never survived without her sustained interest and support. A deeply religious woman, Dodge was part of a generation of middle- and upper-class women who became involved in urban social reform efforts during the late nineteenth century. A site dedicated to her, Grace Hoadley Dodge: A Woman of Her Times, produced by Milbank Memorial Library at Teachers College, features an overview of Dodge's life and work, including narratives, portraits and documents. The site also points users to additional materials on the Internet about Grace Dodge.
