Full description: top

Agatha Christie is still, over 25 years after her death, one of the world's most successful authors. Her books are read in more than 100 countries and have been translated into 44 languages. But behind the famous name lies an unexpected story. In 1930 Agatha Christie married the archaeologist Max Mallowan (1904-78) and afterwards accompanied him on all his excavations in the Middle East.

In this seminar, Henrietta McCall, special curator for the Agatha Christie and Archaeology exhibition at the British Museum, retraces Agatha Christie's travels to the ancient sites, and explores how life on archaeological digs provided a constant inspiration and setting for many of her books.

But the inspiration was not one-sided: Agatha Christie's marriage to Max Mallowan did great service to the fields of both archaeology and crime writing: Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile, and Appointment with Death were all inspired by visits to archaeological sites. Archaeology benefited as well: Max Mallowan's academic qualifications were only mediocre, but through his own enthusiasm and Agatha Christie's emotional, financial, and material aid, Mallowan helped to make major discoveries in Ur (northern Iraq) and Syria, as he recalls in Nimrud and its Remains.
