Science, Satire and Empathy

Tracking the encounters between science, literature, and epistemology in the Victorian
era, Gillian Beer, King Edward VII Professor of English Literature at Clare Hall,
Cambridge, UK, discusses the origins and use of satire and empathy, which became a
predominant part of literary and scientific discourse during this period. Beer argues
that by the late nineteenth century, both satire and empathy had become necessary tools
for the study of other forms of consciousness.
